Production of both cattle and calves and hogs and pigs in the U.S. and Canada are on the rise, according to a pair of joint reports issued by USDAs National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and Statistics Canada.
All cattle and calves in the U.S. and Canada totaled about 116 million head on July 1, representing a 4% increase from 2016, according to NASS and Statistics Canada. All cows and heifers that have calved jumped 5% from 2015 to 46.6 million head.
All cattle and calves in the U.S. as of the July 1 date, totaled 103 millioiron pills ferrous gluconaten head, 4% above the 98.2 million head on July 1, 2015. The breeding inventory, at about 1.3 million head, was up 1% from last year and up 2% from 2015. Market hog inventory, at 12.9 million head, was up 2% from last year and up 6% from 2015. The semi-annual pig crop, at 14.9 million head, was up 3% from 2016 and up 5% from 2015. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 1.27 million head, up 1% from last year and up 2% from 2015.
